Suya
Beef Suya
Suya is a popular Nigerian street food that consists of skewered grilled meat coated in a spicy, peanut-based spice mix. It’s a bold, flavorful dish that’s perfect for casual gatherings or barbecues.
Ingredients:
500g beef (or chicken), thinly sliced into strips
1 large onion, sliced
1 tablespoon ground peanuts (or peanut powder)
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon ground cayenne pepper
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cumin
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Salt to taste
Wooden skewers (soaked in water)
Instructions:
In a small bowl, mix together ground peanuts, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, ginger, cumin, and salt.
Coat the beef strips in the spice mix and let marinate for at least 30 minutes.
Thread the marinated meat onto the skewers, alternating with onion slices.
Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium heat. Brush with a little vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
Grill the skewers for about 4-5 minutes per side or until the meat is cooked through.
Serve hot with sliced onions, tomatoes, and a drizzle of spicy pepper sauce on the side.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve Suya with a side of rice, fried plantains, or a simple salad to complement the bold flavors.
